Description

The collection comprises 235 copy negatives and corresponding file prints, which were made from original drawings in pen and blue wash, loaned to the Archive by the auctioneers Abbott and Holder in 1980.

The drawings were created in the 1850s by an unknown artist. They predominantly show exterior views of churches in Devon, with some in Cornwall and Somerset. There are also several exterior views of rectories and other buildings of interest in Devon, alongside a number of interior views of churches. The drawings seem to have been created as an album, although not all the pages were available for copying. A handwritten list of sites drawn was included on the first three pages, and it is apparent from this that some of the drawings were missing when the collection was loaned to the Archive. The originals were sold by auction by Abbott and Holder Ltd, auctioneers, in July 1980. It is not known whether they were sold individually or as a set.

The collection is interesting as an example of a pre-photographic survey of a specific building type and location.
